Therapy for children at Monocacy Therapy

Children

I have effectively treated symptoms of
post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety,
and bipolar disorder in children ages 8 and up.

I have also helped many children experiencing hardships such as divorce, military moves, sibling conflict, and school bullying, to stay grounded, engage in hobbies they enjoy, and advocate for themselves. My approach to children, tweens, and teens is centered on their preferred methods of interaction. To engage young patients, I use games, writing, art, dance, child-friendly meditation and mindfulness, my own pets, and theirs. Wherever appropriate, I seek to incorporate parents and other trusted caretakers into the therapy. I try to learn about your background and parenting approach, and provide feedback on things that you might try together outside of sessions in order to strengthen your bond, set boundaries, and advocate for your child’s needs at school.

Therapy for couples and families at Monocacy Therapy

Couples & families

When working with couples and families, I focus on creating an environment of mutual respect, where each family member, whatever their age or unique abilities, participates.

Informed by emotionally focused and family systems approaches, I look for patterns in how you communicate with each other and use the process to help develop strategies more adaptive to your family’s needs. Patients have told me that I make them comfortable participating when they may have been nervous at first; that they take new tools from sessions to implement in their daily lives; and that they gain a renewed sense of what makes their relationships strong.

Therapy for adults at Monocacy Therapy

Adults

I have worked with adults of various ages, from 20-somethings to 80-somethings.

I believe that people can use their core values and beliefs to effectively manage symptoms of post-traumatic stress, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety. I specialize in helping young adults in their 20s and 30s with symptoms of complex trauma to navigate life transitions such as new careers, leaving home, parenthood, military and public-service-related moves, and immigration. Exposure therapy, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral therapy are examples of approaches I have relied upon to help people feel better and reach their potential. I am trained in a variety of techniques and approaches which I incorporate into my practice, including:

Seeking Safety
(often used to treat addiction and trauma together)

My patients have noticed that I am open to feedback and willing to change my strategy when needed or desired. I view individual therapy as an evolving process that can—and should—transform along with you and your goals.
